PM Sharif appoints ex-PCB chief Zaka Ashraf to run Pakistan's cricket affairs

  • Former PCB chief Zaka Ashraf appointed chairman of the PCB's management committee
  • Ashraf will head a 10-member committee that would not serve for more than 6 months

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday appointed former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf as the new chair of the cricket board's management committee.

The PCB management committee's post fell vacant after former PCB chief Najam Sethi pulled out of the race to be elected the new chairman of the cricket board. The prime minister, who is the patron of the PCB, appoints its chairman—a move that has often been criticized by cricket analysts and experts who believe the board should run independently.

It is widely understood that Ashraf, a former PCB chairman himself, was appointed to the post at former Pakistan president Asif Ali Zardari's insistence.

"Appointment of Management Committee and Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner of Pakistan Cricket Board," a notification released by the Prime Minister's Office read, with Ashraf's name featured on the top of the list as the chairman.

The management committee will have 10 members in total, Ashraf included and has been constituted for a period not exceeding six months.
