LONDON: The US has urged its citizens in the Middle East to exercise heightened caution, warning that the regional security environment remains volatile and could deteriorate further amid ongoing tensions.
In a security alert issued on Friday, the US Embassy in Jerusalem said Americans in the region should be prepared for flight cancellations, temporary airspace closures and other travel disruptions as airlines continue to adjust schedules.
“Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation,” the Embassy said.
It also advised Americans outside the region to reconsider travel to and through the Middle East and urged those who choose to travel to closely monitor airline operations and airport updates.
The alert comes as fighting between the US and Iran continues to escalate across the region.
US forces carried out a 13th consecutive night of strikes on Iranian targets overnight, while Iran launched fresh missile and drone attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, prompting air raid sirens and interceptions by Gulf air defense systems.
The US Embassy also warned that American diplomatic facilities and interests abroad could face threats.
“US diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted,” the statement said, adding that Iran and groups aligned with Tehran “may target other US interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world.”
The State Department reminded US citizens that it had authorized the departure of non-emergency government personnel and eligible family members from its mission in Israel on Feb. 27 because of security risks.
Despite the warning, the US Embassy said its consular sections in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv remain open for both routine and emergency services.
It advised Americans in Israel to identify the nearest shelter or protected space, download the Israeli military’s Home Front Command alert application, maintain emergency supplies and avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.
It also urged US citizens to remain aware of their surroundings, follow the instructions of local authorities and exercise caution at locations publicly associated with the US.
