LONDON: Kuwait Airways on Wednesday operated the first direct flights between Damascus and Kuwait City in 14 years.
It follows the first flight to Syria by Kuwait’s Jazeera Airways, which landed in late June at Aleppo International, the country’s second-largest airport after Damascus.
The Civil Aviation Authority said the move was part of efforts to enhance air connectivity between Syria, the Middle East and beyond, and to provide travelers with more options, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.
At least 12 airlines have gradually resumed flights to and from Damascus and Aleppo since the fall of the Bashar Assad regime in late 2024, which ended almost 14 years of civil war. They include major airlines operated by Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia’s flynas and Flyadeal, Qatar Airways, the UAE’s Etihad Airways, Royal Jordanian, and Libya’s Afriqiyah Airways, as well as Turkish Airlines and Romania-based Dan Air.
Syrian Airlines operated its first flight from Damascus to Amsterdam in early July. Flights between Syria and all European cities, except Moscow, were suspended during the war.
