Syria probes ministry cyberattack as sensitive documents appear online

DAMASCUS: Syria has said it is investigating a cyberattack that leaked sensitive information from the foreign ministry, with internal documents appearing on messaging app Telegram.
In a statement carried by Syria’s official SANA news agency, the ministry said it had begun “taking the necessary measures to verify and investigate the leaked documents.”
It will carry out “a comprehensive investigation to determine the source, mechanism, and scope of the leak,” it added, and “contain its repercussions, and hold accountable all those found to be involved.”
The documents, most of which date from after the fall of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar Assad in 2024, include official correspondence between embassies and information on Syrian expats as well as employee salaries.
They were posted online on a Telegram channel called “Syrian foreign ministry leaks.”
The ministry and Syrian consulates are carrying out their duties as normal, the statement added.
Damascus will “take all necessary measures to protect information security, safeguard official documents, and preserve the interests of the state and its institutions,” the ministry said.
