Where We Are Going Today: Meet Point Burger in Jeddah

  • A nice touch was serving the lettuce, tomato, sauce and pickles separately, allowing guests to assemble the burger to their liking

In search of a weekend treat, I stopped by Meet Point Burger in Jeddah’s Salama district on Al-Yamamah Street, a newly opened burger place with an American flair.

The exterior sets the tone with a vintage red Ford sports car hinting at the nostalgic, Americana-inspired experience inside. The interior continues the theme with an industrial design that evokes an old train station.

Double-height ceilings, exposed metalwork, screen and a warm blend of metal, red accents and polished wood give the space cinematic drama without compromising comfort.

The menu leans heavily into American-style comfort food, elevated with a gourmet touch. I began with the NY hot dog, presented as one of the restaurant’s signature items. The grilled sausage comes tucked into soft bread and piled high with fried onions, creamy sauce, chives and sauteed peppers.

While the textures delivered a pleasant mix of crunch and juiciness, the flavors fell short of the original New York-style hot dog I had anticipated. The toppings overwhelmed the sausage, and the portion felt noticeably small, especially when measured against typical American servings.

My second order, the Meet Point burger, proved more satisfying. The patty was well-smoked, juicy and the meat was cooked to a tender finish. The only drawback was its size; diners with a big appetite may need a double order.

A nice touch was serving the lettuce, tomato, sauce and pickles separately, allowing guests to assemble the burger to their liking. I would have preferred a tangier pickle, as the milder version offered less contrast to the rich meat.

The accompanying fries, however, were good, and the table setup, with ample sauces and wet wipes, was appreciated.

A glass-bottled Coca-Cola accompanied the meal, served with a reusable branded cup in a striking red design, which guests are free to take home.

For a total of SR98 ($26), the pricing felt fair for the experience.

Overall, Meet Point Burger offers enjoyable flavors, a standout ambiance and friendly, efficient service. I would recommend the burger — just order two if you are hungry.

Where We Are Going Today: Alkofeia in Jeddah

  • The menu is extensive, with a plethora of dishes prepared fresh

In my household, weekends are a chance to step away from mundane daily chores and unwind, which usually translates into eating out and trying something different.

And, so while driving with my husband around Jeddah’s Rawdah district, Palestinian restaurant Alkofeia caught our attention with its unusual warm rustic facade.

The interiors of the multi-story restaurant exude an old-world Middle Eastern charm, with miniature roped furniture strategically hanging from the ceiling and vintage sign boards plastered across the walls. The abstract wooden tables, chairs with traditional Palestinian embroidered covers and distinctive cutlery add a unique touch. The restaurant is spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

The menu is extensive, with a plethora of dishes prepared fresh.

For starters, we ordered the beetroot hummus, which was super creamy and flavorful; and the fattoush salad — which was quite fancifully served by the waiter — was fresh, crisp and tangy with the right amount of pomegranate molasses. We also shared a comforting bowl of barley soup.

For the main course, I had chicken maqlouba, which also comprised finely sliced potatoes, cauliflower, tomatoes and toasted almonds; it was simply delicious. My husband had a traditional meat and rice dish garnished with toasted almonds; he quite enjoyed it but I did not. Different palates, I guess.

Both dishes came with a side of small bowls of plain yogurt.

For drinks, both of us had pomegranate juice, finely balanced between sweet and sour.

The prices are wallet-friendly given the prime location and generous portion sizes. We had enough leftovers to take home for lunch the next day.

The servers are friendly but could be a little more attentive considering the restaurant was not busy when we went.

This was my second visit — and surely, not my last.
