MAKKAH: Under the aegis of King Salman, the closing ceremony of the 43rd King Abdulaziz International Competition for the Memorization, Recitation and Interpretation of the Qur’an took place recently in Makkah.
During the ceremony, Deputy Makkah Gov. Prince Badr bin Sultan honored the winners on behalf of King Salman.
Held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the competition was organized by the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, represented by the General Secretariat of the Local and International Holy Qur’an Competition.
Contestants from 117 countries competed in all five categories of the competition, with the total prize amount for this edition reaching SR4 million ($1.07 million).
On behalf of the participants, Abdullah bin Noman bin Ateeq of Oman delivered a speech, expressing thanks and appreciation to the Kingdom for sponsoring this international competition. “This prestigious contest shows the right way, as it motivates Muslims and inspires them to memorize the Holy Qur’an,” he said.
Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance Abdullatif Al-Asheikh, who was also the general supervisor of the competition, pointed out that the ministry has harnessed all its capabilities to serve this prestigious Qur’anic competition.
He said the ministry was keen to achieve the highest standards of accuracy, and transparency during the contest, using an electronic arbitration system.
He congratulated the winners for excelling in memorizing the Holy Qur’an and representing their countries in this competition. He also thanked the employees of the Two Holy Mosques for supporting and facilitating the organization of this competition in the Grand Mosque.
At the end of the ceremony, the winning students were honored.
