Pakistan digitizes polio certification for travelers to prevent international spread

  • International travelers are now required to get polio drops at designated centers across Pakistan
  • Travelers can then download polio card from National Database and Registration Authority website

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government has introduced digital polio certification for international travelers as a measure to combat forgery and prevent the spread of the disease beyond its borders, officials said on Friday, vowing to enhance the authenticity of the certification process.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only remaining polio-endemic countries globally, with international travelers from these nations posing a potential threat of spreading the virus to polio-free regions.

Pakistan reported only two cases of the wild polio virus this year, a drop from 20 cases documented last year.

"Polio vaccination is mandatory for all international travelers from Pakistan regardless of age to prevent the spread of the poliovirus to other countries," Dr. Baseet Achakzai, director-general at the Ministry of National Health Services, told Arab News.

"The ministry has issued policy guidelines to relevant authorities to ensure smooth vaccination of polio drops to all international travelers.”

The government has implemented digital polio certification to prevent forgery and enhance the authenticity of vaccination records, officials said.

Designated vaccination centers in Islamabad and across the country are responsible for entering travelers' vaccination data online after administering polio drops. Travelers can then download their polio card from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) website after paying a fee of Rs100 ($0.33) through a debit or credit card.

"The online registration of international travelers for polio certification helps prevent forgery, maintain a proper vaccination record, and curb the virus's spread beyond our border," Dr. Zaeem Zia, a district health officer in Islamabad, told Arab News.

He said up to 800 international travelers had been visiting the polio vaccination center in Islamabad daily, but this number had gone down to 300 after vaccination and registration facilities were made available at all international airports.

"This online registration and certification of the international travelers after getting the polio drops would prove a major step ahead in the eradication of the disease," he said.

Pakistan, Jordan discuss defense cooperation amid flurry of high-level contacts

  • Field Marshal Asim Munir hosted Maj Gen Yousef Ahmed A. Al Huneiti of Jordan in Rawalpindi
  • Munir visited Amman in October, followed by King Abdullah II’s trip to Pakistan the next month

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir met the chairman of Jordan’s Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday to discuss defense and military cooperation, the Pakistani military said in a statement, amid a recent uptick in high-level engagement between the two countries.

Major General Yousef Ahmed A. Al Huneiti, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Jordan Armed Forces, called on Munir at Pakistan’s military headquarters in Rawalpindi, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

“During the meeting, both sides discussed matters of mutual interest, regional security dynamics, and avenues for enhanced bilateral defense and military cooperation,” ISPR said.

“Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening defense ties with Jordan and emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to address evolving security challenges,” it added.

The meeting follows a series of senior-level interactions between the two countries this year. Munir paid an official visit to Jordan in October, while Jordan’s military leadership has also engaged with Pakistan’s top brass in recent months.

In November, Jordan’s King Abdullah II visited Pakistan for talks with the country’s civilian and military leadership.

Pakistan and Jordan have long maintained cordial relations, including defense cooperation and military training links, though senior-level exchanges have been relatively infrequent.

Both countries were also among eight Muslim-majority states whose top leaders participated in discussions with United States President Donald Trump in September on proposals aimed at ending the war in Gaza and issued joint statements with other countries over the situation in West Asia in recent months.

ISPR said the meeting concluded with a shared resolve to further deepen military-to-military cooperation between Pakistan and Jordan.
