MAKKAH, 21 July 2007 — Seventy pilgrims, here to perform Umrah, were evacuated from a hotel close to the Grand Mosque here yesterday morning following a fire.

The fire was on the fourth floor of the Dar Abu Taha Hotel on Misfalah Road, and Civil Defense carried out fire-fighting and rescue operations on a war footing.

According to Civil Defense sources nobody was hurt as the evacuation was carried out quickly. The fire is reported to have been started by an electrical short-circuit. On Thursday another fire was also reported at a 12-story hotel in Jabal Al-Kaaba. The fire was put out before it caused any serious damage.
