JEDDAH: Michael Jackson impersonator Lenny Jay brought his tribute show “This Is Michael” to Abadi Al-Johar Arena in Jeddah on Friday for a night of music, dance and nostalgia.
The show, organized by Benchmark, drew a packed audience, with Jackson fans turning up in outfits inspired by the late US pop icon’s signature style.
Jay, who has performed his show across the world, took the crowd through some of Jackson’s best-known songs, combining live vocals with the dazzling choreography for which the legendary performer — known as the King of Pop — was famed, including his iconic moonwalk.
For many in attendance, the evening was also an opportunity to share their love of Jackson’s music with the next generation.
Deena Mohammed, who attended with her children, said: “I have been a Michael Jackson fan since I was a child, and watching a show like this live was something I never imagined I would experience. I had heard so much about Lenny Jay and his moonwalk, but seeing it on stage was completely different. It was a memorable night, and sharing it with my children made it even more special.”
The audience responded enthusiastically throughout the performance, with familiar songs prompting cheers and singalongs.
Audience member Hammad Raheem told Arab News: “I had goosebumps throughout the entire show. The performances were remarkable, and the songs brought back so many memories. I used to dress up and dance like Michael Jackson when I was younger, so seeing the tribute live was a special experience. The dancers and musicians were excellent, while the lighting and sound added another level to the show.”
Another attendee, Mohammed Fahad, echoed Raheem’s words, saying: “The synchronized choreography and visual effects made the show even more stunning. Jeddah always hosts something new, but we never imagined we would get to attend a show like this. My friends and I wore sequin-decorated jackets as a tribute to Michael Jackson. The energy throughout the show was different, and when Lenny Jay said the crowd had a different energy, everyone went even louder.”
The tribute brought together generations, with fans who grew up with Michael Jackson’s music as well as younger audiences and children enjoying the songs, dance and performances.
“His dance moves and songs are iconic and have been passed down through generations. I watched his documentary recently, and now I got to see the show, so I know a lot about him as a person and how hard he worked. Even after he is gone, we still remember him,” said eight-year-old Saleh Abdullah.
Lenny Jay ended the show by saying: “Thank you for having us and for this beautiful opportunity. It has been an amazing night, and the energy from everyone here has been incredible. Thank you for celebrating Michael Jackson with us.”
