Syrian government helps 1,200 displaced families return to Afrin

LONDON: Syrian authorities facilitated the return of 1,200 families to their towns and villages in Afrin, a Kurdish-majority region in northwestern Syria.

The families were displaced in Hasakah in eastern Syria as a result of the country’s civil war that lasted from 2011 to 2024.

Internal security units from Hasakah and Aleppo governorates provided logistical support as they escorted the convoy to Afrin over a distance of more than 400 km, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

The move is part of an agreement between the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, which includes the return of displaced people.

In April, 800 displaced Syrian families returned to Afrin from Hasakah.

The Syrian army entered Hasakah in January and deployed forces throughout the surrounding Jazira region to help secure it under an agreement between the government and the SDF.

The government is working to help the return of displaced people in various parts of Syria, including the border town of Ras Al-Ain, the SANA added.
