LONDON: The Syrian Petroleum Company unloaded more than 5,000 metric tonnes of gas at Banyas Port this week as part of efforts to ensure a steady energy supply for economic recovery.
On Tuesday, authorities unloaded the gas tanker “Premier,” which carried a cargo of more than 2,324 metric tonnes. On Monday, they unloaded the tanker “Gas Milano,” which delivered 2,705 metric tonnes of gas. All shipments were transferred into the storage tanks of the Banyas Gas Department.
An official told the Syrian Arab News Agency that additional gas tankers are anchored at the Mediterranean port, awaiting their turn to discharge, with a capacity of almost 11,000 metric tonnes.
The Syrian Ministry of Energy and the SPC aim to strengthen national strategic gas reserves across all Syrian provinces as the country emerges from its more than decade-long civil war. A vital 850 km pipeline connecting Banyas and Kirkuk in Iraq was damaged during the war, along with dams, bridges and power stations.
