Israeli attacks on Syria a ‘dangerous escalation’: Turkiye

  • “We view Israel’s attack targeting military infrastructure in southern Syria as a dangerous escalation and strongly condemn it,” a foreign ministry statement said
  • Israel’s military said it had struck Syrian army camps

ANKARA: Turkiye on Friday lashed out at Israel for striking army camps in southern Syria, urging the international community to intervene.
“We view Israel’s attack targeting military infrastructure in southern Syria as a dangerous escalation and strongly condemn it,” a foreign ministry statement said, urging the international community “to stop the Israeli attacks.”
Syria has so far avoided being dragged into the regional war that began on February 28 when Israel and the United States began striking Iran, which has hit back by firing ballistic missiles and drones at countries across the region.
But on Friday Israel’s military said it had struck Syrian army camps in response to what it called attacks against the Druze community in the southern Sweida province.
Since the war began, Turkiye has repeatedly accused Israel of pursuing an “expansionist policy” and seeking to drag other nations into the war.
Lebanon was pulled into the conflict on March 2 when Iran-backed Hezbollah attacked Israel in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, with Israel hitting back with a sustained bombing campaign that has killed more than 1,000 people and displaced over a million.
