Pakistan PM meets Palestinian counterpart as Islamabad eyes increasing engagement at WEF summit

  • Palestinian PM Mohammed Mustafa thanks Shehbaz Sharif for supporting Palestine during brief exchange
  • Sharif to meet global leaders, attend breakfast event in Davos today on sidelines of World Economic Forum summit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met his Palestinian counterpart on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in Davos on Wednesday, state media reported as Islamabad eyes increasing engagement with global leaders, policymakers and business executives at the international stage.

Sharif arrived in Switzerland on Tuesday to attend the WEFs 56th annual meeting, which brings together heads of state, senior government officials, business executives and leaders of international organizations to discuss global economic, political and social challenges.

In a video uploaded by the state-run Pakistan TV Digital, Sharif is stopped by Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa as he walks by. Mustafa introduces himself and shakes Sharif's hand during the brief exchange between the two.

"Thank you for your support," Mustafa can be heard telling Sharif in the video, who exchanges pleasantries with his Palestinian counterpart.

Pakistan has consistently supported Palestine over the past two years at international forums such as the UN Security Council and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation during Israel's war on Gaza, which has killed thousands of Palestinian people, including women and children.

Islamabad has increasingly called on international powers to intervene and ensure the fragile ceasefire in Palestine upholds and Israel is held accountable for its "war crimes" in Gaza.

The South Asian country has also sent dispatched several consignments of relief items for Gaza and has engaged with other countries to ensure peace in the Middle East.

On Sharif's WEF engagements, his office said in an earlier statement that he will attend a breakfast event and will also address the gathering there on Wednesday.

He will take part in an informal meeting of world leaders this year themed ‘The Importance of Dialogue in a Divided Global Landscape,'" the PM's Office said.

On the sidelines of the WEF, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, who is accompanying Sharif, inaugurated the Pathfinder Group’s Pakistan Pavilion, describing it as a platform to project Pakistan’s economic potential and the growing role of innovation-driven enterprises.

“He underscored the critical role of start-ups in advancing socio-economic development and driving innovation across diverse sectors,” the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the government remained committed to supporting entrepreneurs, particularly youth-led ventures.

Two Pakistani men indicted in $10 million Medicare fraud scheme in Chicago

  • Prosecutors say defendants billed Medicare and private insurers for nonexistent services
  • Authorities say millions of dollars in proceeds were laundered and transferred to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Two Pakistani nationals have been indicted in Chicago for allegedly participating in a $10 million health care fraud scheme that targeted Medicare and private insurers, the US Justice Department said on Thursday.

A federal grand jury charged Burhan Mirza, 31, who resided in Pakistan, and Kashif Iqbal, 48, who lived in Texas, with submitting fraudulent claims for medical services and equipment that were never provided, according to an indictment filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Medicare is the US federal health insurance program primarily serving Americans aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger people with disabilities.

“Rooting out fraud is a priority for this Justice Department, and these defendants allegedly billed millions of dollars from Medicare and laundered the proceeds to Pakistan,” Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement.

“These alleged criminals stole from a program designed to provide health care benefits to American seniors and the disabled, not line the pockets of foreign fraudsters,” he added. “We will not tolerate these schemes that divert taxpayer dollars to criminals.”

Prosecutors said that in 2023 and 2024, the defendants and their alleged co-conspirators used nominee-owned laboratories and durable medical equipment providers to bill Medicare and private health benefit programs for nonexistent services.

According to the indictment, Mirza obtained identifying information of individuals, providers and insurers without their knowledge and used it to support fraudulent claims submitted on behalf of shell companies. Iqbal was allegedly linked to several durable medical equipment providers that filed false claims and is accused of laundering proceeds and coordinating transfers of funds to Pakistan.

Mirza faces 12 counts of health care fraud and five counts of money laundering. Iqbal is charged with 12 counts of health care fraud, six counts of money laundering and one count of making a false statement to US law enforcement. Arraignments have not yet been scheduled.

Three additional defendants, including an Indian, previously charged in the investigation, have pleaded guilty to federal health care fraud charges and are awaiting sentencing.

An indictment contains allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
