Türkiye hands over second MILGEM corvette warship to Pakistan amid deepening defense ties

  • Türkiye delivered the first of its four MILGEM corvettes, PNS Babur, to Pakistan in 2023
  • Pakistan, Turkiye friendship to endure “until the end of time,” says President Erdoğan

ISLAMABAD: Türkiye handed over the second MILGEM class ship PNS Khaibar to Pakistan in Istanbul this week, the Pakistani military’s media wing said on Sunday, reflecting a sign of deepening defense relations between the two nations.

Pakistan signed a contract in July 2018 to buy four corvettes for its navy with the Turkish state-owned defense firm ASFAT. The MILGEM project is a Turkish warship program that aims to develop multipurpose corvettes and frigates that can be deployed in a range of missions, including reconnaissance, surveillance, early warning, anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air warfare, and amphibious operations.

The first of the four MILGEM corvettes, PNS Babur, was delivered in 2023. Two out of the four MILGEM ships are being constructed in Pakistan.

“PN MILGEM ships are the most technologically advanced surface platforms,” the Inter-Services Public Relations, the Pakistani military’s media wing, said in a statement.

“These vessels are equipped with latest command and control systems integrated with modern weapons and advanced sensors.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the ship delivery ceremony at the İstanbul Naval Shipyard Command on Saturday, where he spoke of the cordial ties between Pakistan and Türkiye.

Following the ceremony, President Erdoğan visited the ship and met Pakistan’s Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf, the ISPR said.

“During the visit Turkish President and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf exchanged views on maritime security in the region and discussed avenues for future PN-TNF joint initiatives,” the military’s media wing said.

The development takes place as Türkiye and Pakistan move to strengthen their defense relations. Islamabad and Ankara have warmed up to each other after Türkiye’s public condemnation of Indian cross-border strikes in Pakistan earlier this year that sparked a brief military conflict between both sides.

Pakistan urges Hajj pilgrims to complete Saudi biometrics till Sunday

  • Saudi Arabia has allocated Pakistan a quota of 179,210 pilgrims for this year’s Hajj
  • Saudi biometric verification is mandatory for issuance of Hajj visas, ministry says

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani religious affairs ministry has urged aspiring Hajj pilgrims to complete mandatory Saudi biometric verification for Hajj visas by Sunday, Pakistani state media reported, with preparations for the 2026 pilgrimage gathering pace following stricter oversight of the Hajj process.

Saudi Arabia has allocated Pakistan a quota of 179,210 pilgrims for Hajj 2026, with the majority of seats reserved under the government scheme and the remainder allocated to private tour operators.

Regulations for private Hajj operators have been tightened and their quota reduced following widespread complaints last year, when tens of thousands of pilgrims were unable to travel under the private Hajj scheme.

The Pakistani religious affairs ministry said last month that Saudi biometric verification is mandatory for the issuance of Hajj visas and pilgrims should complete it at home using the ‘Saudi Visa Bio’ app.

“Hajj visas will not be issued without biometrics, however pilgrims over 80 years of age are exempted from biometrics,” the Radio Pakistan broadcaster reported, citing the religious affairs ministry.

Pakistan has been steadily implementing digital and procedural requirements for pilgrims ahead of Hajj 2026, including mandatory training sessions, biometric checks and greater use of mobile applications, as part of efforts to reduce mismanagement.

Pilgrims who were unable to complete biometric verification through the mobile application should visit designated Saudi Tasheer centers before Feb. 8, according to the religious affairs ministry.

Details of the centers are available on Pakistan’s official Hajj mobile application. Tasheer centers will remain open from 9am to 5pm today and on Sunday to facilitate Hajj pilgrims, it added.
