  • Visitors flock from around the world to see the historical sites

RIYADH: People are flocking to attend Hal Al-Qusoor in Diriyah to explore the history of the Saudi state through six historical castles which opened to the public for the first time this week.

The exhibition in Diriyah began on Nov. 19 and runs until Feb. 11 in At-Turaif, a historical district and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the largest brick-built neighborhoods in the Najdi architectural style in the world.

At Hal Al-Qusoor, visitors can take a tour to learn about the history of Diriyah and the historical lifestyle of At-Turaif’s residents.

Visitors are offered the opportunity to witness the lifestyles of royal family members at castles in the area, learn about the essential characteristics of each homeowner and watch a short show in each castle.

“I came as a visitor to the palaces of our ancestors, our heritage and our fathers, so that we may gain an idea of life and so that our children may become educated,” said visitor Naiyfah Al-Eid.

She added: “The palaces are very beautiful ... my children are very impressed because it is something new to them and a culture that is almost extinct for them.”

Al-Eid mentioned how important the educational component of these sites is, and suggested that there should be more of them to educate young people and international visitors.

One visitor came to Riyadh from Jeddah to attend the Diriyah Season events.

“I came here as a visitor to see the museums and historical monuments in Diriyah, but this exceeded my expectations … very beautiful,” Mona Al-Harabi told Arab News.

Hal Al-Qusoor explores the stories of the people who shaped Diriyah’s rise, offering a unique look into the administrative, social and cultural life of the palaces of imams and princes.

The exhibition highlights the historic role of At-Turaif as a center of governance, culture and community during the First Saudi State (established in 1727 AD), using storytelling and interactive experiences.

The site was selected by Imam Abdulaziz bin Muhammad bin Saud as his seat of power in 1766 for its prime location on the western bank of Wadi Hanifa.

Some of the important historical sites in At-Turaif include the Salwa Palace, Sibalat Modhi which was a charitable center for students and travelers, the treasury, a mosque and a bathhouse.

It is open to visitors of all ages daily from 4 p.m. to midnight, and tickets can be purchased through the official Diriyah Season website or through Webook, for a fee of SR40 ($10.67) per person.

With several historical monuments to explore, live performances to enjoy and a lively atmosphere, Diriyah has plenty for visitors this season.
