Jeddah-based Modern Markets, a subsidiary of Ahmed Abdulwahed Trading Co., has been appointed the exclusive Kingdomwide distributor for JABRA, a leading brand of hands-free communication products for the mobile consumer market including industry-leading Bluetooth headsets. Yaser A. Abdulwahed, sales and marketing director of Modern Markets, and Vincent Pena, country manager for JABRA’s EMEA key venture markets, signed a contract in Jeddah yesterday. JABRA’s first products being launched across the Kingdom are two of the industry’s “best selling” Bluetooth headsets that work with the latest Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones - BT200 and BT250. “Both headsets feature comfortable behind-the-ear design and can work up to 10 meters from a mobile phone,” Pena said. JABRA will also launch its upcoming SP100 portable Bluetooth wireless speakerphone enabling users to enjoy the many benefits of hands-free and cord-free conversations in the car, the office or the home, Pena said, adding that by partnering with Modern Markets JABRA can bring its products to the region quickly. Both BT200 and BT250 Bluetooth headsets are leading the industry due to the “unique and sophisticated design, ultimate comfort and superior performance.”

Dodge Durango

DaimlerChrysler Middle East has responded with the introduction of a special protection version of the popular new Dodge Durango. Armored to B6 level, which provides against armed attacks and assassination attempts, the high protection level vehicle will also resist military-style rifle bullets and protect against hand grenade splinters and other explosive devices. “From the outside it is hard to tell the difference between the standard and armored Durango,” said Bruce Ohms, director, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge Middle East. Armortek, Dallas, Texas, manufactures the high protection Dodge Durango. The company has been building specialist vehicles for the US government and security companies at home and worldwide for 25 years. The Durango’s standard HEMI V8 340 horsepower engine is more than capable of taking the extra weight of the new vehicle.

The countdown to the inaugural Dubai International Maritime Awards (DIMA) has begun with only six weeks left for final submission of entries. Organized by Seatrade Middle East, the awards will reward top achievers who have worked to improve maritime standards within West and Central Asia. The deadline for entries is Sept. 30. “Local, regional and international entries are invited but the product or service must either have originated, or be shown to have directly benefited maritime activity, within West and Central Asia during 2003,” said Seatrade MD Chris Hayman. “The long-standing Seatrade Awards scheme is already well known in the international maritime community for independence and fairness. The DIMA will likewise maintain these standards.” Entry is free of charge and there is no restriction on the number of times a company can enter. short listed entrants will be invited to attend the presentation dinner at the Fairmont Dubai on Dec. 6 during Seatrade Middle East Maritime 2004, the region’s premier exhibition and conference for the maritime sector, which will run at the Dubai World Trade Center from December 6-8.

Batelco

Batelco has announced the successful completion of ISO 9001:2000 Quality audits for two additional departments within the company, raising the number of Batelco’s ISO 9001-2000 certifications to 45. Pre-paid mobile services, mobile pre-paid network and GSM roaming have all successfully earned the internationally recognized accreditation by matching their business processes to certification standards. “The pre-paid mobile services department deserves special recognition as the first department from sales and marketing to join the ISO 9001-2000 registration,” explains Saleh Tarradah, acting chief operating officer — support services at Batelco. “The department’s staff has shown relentless effort and dedication to achieve this accreditation during what has been a very busy time for them with the introduction of competition in our market. In addition, mobile pre-paid network and GSM roaming accreditation means that all of Batelco’s mobile network departments are certified to ISO 9001-2000, proving that unit’s commitment to customer satisfaction and improved efficiency.” Batelco’s recent ISO 9001-2000 accreditations were granted following an application and assessment program conducted by the company and the globally recognized quality assurance body, British Standards Institute (BSI).
