RIYADH, 25 March 2004 — Greece celebrates today the 183rd anniversary of the proclamation of its fight for independence on March 25, 1821.

Since then, Greece has become of a thriving modern state, enjoying political stability, economic progress and prosperity and is committed to the ideals of peace, freedom and democracy.

Greece is also preparing to hold the 2004 Olympic Games, the premier world athletic event which originated in ancient Greece. For my country, it is not only an organizational and economic challenge, but an opportunity to host a unique and invaluable international event. The values and ideals that the Olympics celebrate are an inspiration for the whole world.

In the field of foreign policy, Greece has always acted to promote peace, security and stability, as well as a respect of human rights and the implementation of international laws and treaties. Greece, being a member of the European Union, actively contributes toward achieving the Union’s goals.

2003 was a milestone year in the history of the EU: under the Greek presidency, among other things, the great project of the EU enlargement was realized. In this context, I would stress the well-deserved accession of Cyprus to the European family.

Greece and Saudi Arabia enjoy an excellent relationship. Our two religions and cultures, while preserving their distinctive identities, have, through mutual interaction, benefited from each other. The excellent climate prevailing in the Greek-Saudi relations is reflected in a common approach to many international issues and in constructive cooperation at international level.

Greece and Saudi Arabia have identical or similar views on many issues. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is a unique country for many reasons — from its importance in the global economy to its central position in Islam. Greece’s relationship with Saudi Arabia draws strength from the long historical connection, but also from a vigorous partnership in many contemporary fields.

I am convinced that these cordial relations, based on trust and confidence, will continue to grow, for the benefit of our two countries.
