Star players announced for Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo contest

  • The world’s only polo tournament in a desert environment returns to AlUla for a third time from Jan. 17-20
  • All-time great Adolfo Cambiaso will participate with his son Poroto and daughter Mia

ALULA: This year’s Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo event from Jan. 17 to 20 will see the participation of some of the sport’s top stars, the Royal Commission for AlUla announced on Tuesday.

Held in partnership with the Saudi Polo Federation, the eight-team event is the sport’s only organized polo tournament in a desert environment.

Ziad Al-Suhaibani, chief of the sports sector at the commission, said: “The Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo has become a catalyst for AlUla’s emergence as a global home for equestrianism and winter polo in its short yet incredible history.

“Its profile and popularity have grown enormously both regionally and internationally and even more foundations for long-term growth and development will be cemented this year.”

Rami Al-Moallim, vice president of destination management and marketing at the commission, added: “We can’t wait for Jan. 17 when the action at Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo gets underway — it’s going to be a brilliant event and anticipation will be even greater following today’s news. The involvement of some of the sport’s elite players amplifies not only its prestige but also its attractiveness within the international polo community.”

Among the athletes taking part is Argentina’s Adolfo Cambiaso, widely considered the greatest polo player of all time. He makes his way to AlUla alongside Juan Martin Nero, David Stirling, and son Poroto — all teammates at the world-renowned La Dolfina club.

Pablo Mac Donough is also part of the Argentinian contingent alongside female players Lia Salvo and Cambiaso’s daughter, Mia. Britain’s Nina Clarkin is the other female player completing the professional lineup.

The royal dignitaries confirmed for the event include Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan bin Khaled Al-Faisal and Prince Salman bin Mansour bin Nassir Al-Saud.

Prince Abbas bin Ali and Prince Hamza bin Abbas are also competing, as are Anna Dettingen Wallerstein, Carl-Eugen Dettingen Wallerstein and George Spencer Churchill.

The international patrons include Adriano Agosti, Alessandro Barnaba, Sayyu Dantara, Nacho Figueras, Melissa Ganzi, David Paradise, Lila Pearson and Nicky Sen.

The tournament is a part of the commission’s commitment to promote the country’s heritage, culture and arts.

Record prize of up to $200k for a 9-darter at the Saudi Arabia Darts Masters

  • Players who complete a perfect leg will receive $100,000, with the chance to double it by hitting the bullseye with a bonus 10th dart
  • 8 Professional Darts Corporation stars will take on 8 of Asia’s top players in the tournament on Jan. 19 and 20 at the Global Theater in Boulevard City

RIYADH: Players at the Saudi Arabia Darts Masters in Riyadh next week have a chance to win a record-breaking cash prize for a nine-dart finish, with up to $200,000 up for grabs for a perfect leg.

Eight Professional Darts Corporation stars will take on eight of Asia’s leading players at the tournament, which is part of Riyadh Season, on Jan. 19 and 20 at the Global Theater in Boulevard City.

Turki Alalshikh, chairperson of the Kingdom’s General Entertainment Authority, revealed on Thursday that any player who hits a perfect nine-darter during the event will receive a $100,000 bonus, with the chance to double it through the Riyadh Season Bullseye Challenge.

With the leg already won, the player will throw a 10th dart, and if it hits the bullseye the prize will be doubled to $200,000, the biggest amount ever offered by a PDC-sanctioned event for a nine-darter.

Reigning world champion Luke Littler, who will head the line-up in Riyadh, previously hit a nine-darter on the World Series of Darts stage at the Bahrain Masters in 2024.

He will be joined by 2023/24 world champion Luke Humphries, world championship runner-up Gian van Veen, and three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen.

The PDC contingent also includes former world champion Gerwyn Price, world No. 7 Stephen Bunting, former UK Open winner Danny Noppert, and 2023 World Matchplay champion Nathan Aspinall.

Asia will be represented by Singapore veteran Paul Lim, who in 1990 famously threw the first televised World Darts Championship nine-darter, alongside Filipinos Alexis Toylo, Lourence Ilagan and Paolo Nebrida, Japan’s Motomu Sakai, Ryusei Azemoto and Tomoya Goto, and Hong Kong’s Man Lok Leung.
