ISLAMABAD: Dr. Faisal Sultan, personal physician to Imran Khan, has dispelled rumors of the former prime minister suffering from “slow poisoning” in prison, saying no such evidence was found during a brief medical examination that he carried out.
Sultan, who manages the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Center founded by Khan in 1994, spoke to the media after his visit to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Khan, currently detained, had his initial conviction for the illicit sale of state gifts challenged, and although a higher court suspended his sentence, he remains in custody facing charges related to a leaked diplomatic cable.
Amid his ongoing incarceration, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has voiced concerns over his well-being, sparking rumors of foul play.
“I got permission to meet Imran Khan a little while ago in Adiala Jail,” Sultan told the media after stepping out of the prison. “Not only did I meet him, but I also got a chance to conduct a brief physical examination.”
“I am really glad to tell you that he appeared quite active and in good health,” he continued. “His spirits are high. I had a nice conversation with him. I inquired about his health and well-being. And he responded that he was fine and did not make any [health-related] complaints.”
Asked if it seemed to him that the ex-premier was being slow poisoned, he replied in the negative.
“As much as I could examine him, I did not find anything,” he said. “In fact, he looked active, happy and in his usual health.”
Sultan informed the media that Khan asked him about the hospital during their brief chat.
In response to a question, he said he had not seen any of the former prime minister’s medical reports.
