Sri Lanka hand Pakistan mammoth 345-run target in World Cup match

  • Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama score centuries to put Pakistan on back foot
  • Pakistani pacer Hassan Ali returns figures of 4-71 from 10 overs, Haris Rauf 2-64 from his 10 overs

ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka handed Pakistan an impressive 345-run target on Tuesday as the two sides locked horns at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium for their cricket World Cup contest in Hyderabad.
Sri Lanka were dealt an early blow after winning the toss and electing to bat first, with opening batter Kusal Perera departing without scoring off a Hassan Ali delivery.
However, Sri Lanka recovered quickly courtesy of a 102-run partnership between opener Pathum Nissanka (51 runs from 61 balls) and Kusal Mendis, who scored an impressive 122 runs from 77 balls, his innings featuring six sixes.
Sadeera Samarawickrama anchored Sri Lanka’s innings by scoring 108 runs from 89 balls, skillfully finding gaps all over the ground to score his ton.
Ali came back later in the attack with an impressive spell, returning figures of 4-71 from 10 overs while Haris Rauf returned figures of 2-64 from his 10 overs.

“4 wickets in the innings for @RealHa55an as Sri Lanka finish at 344-9,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wrote on the social media platform X.
Pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi continued with his disappointing run in the tournament, finishing with figures of 1-66 from 9 overs while Muhammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan each took a wicket as Sri Lanka ended their innings at 344-9 after 50 overs.
Pakistan and Sri Lanka have played seven matches against each other in ICC World Cups, with the former maintaining a stellar 7-0 record against the 1996 champions.
Pakistan headed into the match slightly more confident than Sri Lanka after winning their opening World Cup encounter against the Netherlands by 81 runs on Friday. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, lost their opening fixture against South Africa by 102 runs on Saturday.

Chelsea return to top four with 2-0 home win over Everton

  • Palmer drilled the ball between goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the near post after Gusto’s pinpoint pass
  • The result lifted Chelsea to 28 points, five behind leaders Arsenal

LONDON: Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 on Saturday to return to the Premier League top four as well-worked first-half goals from talisman Cole Palmer and France fullback Malo Gusto stemmed a run of four games in all competitions without a victory.
Palmer, back in action this month after missing most of the season through injury, drilled the ball between goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the near post after Gusto’s pinpoint pass.
Gusto switched from provider to scorer in the 46th minute when he poked a Pedro Neto cross home after the Portuguese winger outpaced marker Vitalii Mykolenko.
“It was important for us to come back, with a clean sheet it was even better,” Gusto told Sky Sports.
The right-back said he trusted Palmer to score from his pass. “He knows I like to pass the ball to him, it was a great run for him and he scored, so I’m happy for him and me too.”
The result lifted Chelsea to 28 points, five behind leaders Arsenal, who host bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers later on Saturday, and two ahead of Crystal Palace who welcome second-place Manchester City on Sunday. Everton fell to eighth on 24.
The visitors, who had won four of their previous five games, looked bright at the start and matched Chelsea for intent and work rate but they failed to take their chances, with Jack Grealish, James Tarkowski and Idrissa Gueye going close.
Iliman Ndiaye hit the post in the 87th minute but by then the game had run away from Everton, although coach David Moyes remained an animated presence in front of the dugout.
For Chelsea it was a welcome three points after they drew with Arsenal and Bournemouth and lost to Leeds United in the Premier League, as well as
going down 2-1 against Atalanta
in the Champions League on Wednesday.
“It’s important to win games after two or three we didn’t win,” Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said. “It’s important for the players. We are happy.”
