JEDDAH, 22 June 2003 — A rousing rendition of Christina Aguilera’s song “I Turn to You” wowed the judges at the StarQuest 2003 singing competition held at the Philippine Consulate on Friday night.

Out of 10 finalists, John Marimla of Arabian Food Supplies got the first prize for his original rendition of Aguilera’s “I Turn To You.” He won a 21-inch color television. First runner-up was Rino Eleferia of Planet Hollywood for his song “Incomplete,” who won a 14-inch color TV, followed by Edwin Juanchon of Naghi Company placing third.

Arab News was a major sponsor of the event, giving cash prizes to the three winners. Sky Freight Forwarders, Nivea, SADAFCO, Al-Husseini-Seiko, Makati Express, and The Filipino Channel were among the other sponsors.

Musically inclined at the age of six, Marimla won the hearts of the judges and the cheering crowd of the jampacked consulate ground. Obsessed with and an avid fan of Celine Dion, Marimla used to imitate the style of the international singer that eventually gained him the nickname of “John Celine” among his friends.

Marimla’s delivery of his song with perfect diction, high pitch and a quality of voice similar to that of Dion and Aguilera, gained him instant superstar status that evening.

Another highlight of the evening was the rousing rendition of the song “On the Wings of Love,” by Marvin dela Cruz, a 30-year-old textile designer from BG Fashion, and Cabanatuan City native. His clearly modulated voice impressed many in the audience.

The contest ended with the rendition by former “Himig Handog” champions and finalists of the song “Aking Bayani,” composed by Neil Felix, who also chaired the board of judges that night.

The successful event organized by Tropan Probono, headed by Joel Lomadilla with Art Cruz as segment producer, was the culmination of the weeklong Independence Day Celebrations.
