KARACHI: Shahir Afridi, a police officer from southern Pakistan, won on Saturday the Asian Boxing Federation’s title in the middleweight category.
Afridi, who serves at the Rapid Response Force of the Sindh Police, defeated Thailand’s Vachayan Khamon during an eight-round bout in Bangkok.
In a statement after the fight, Sindh Police Inspector General Mushtaq Ahmed Mehar congratulated the champion saying he hoped the officer “will continue to shine the name of Sindh police.”
“It’s a matter of pride for the Rapid Response Force, for Sindh police and also a matter of pride for Pakistan,” Sindh Police Addition Inspector General Dr. Amir Ahmed Sheikh told Arab News.
Sheikh said the Sindh Police had always focused on its personnel’s fitness and that was the reason its officers have been winning local and international competitions.
“The Sindh police are not only after the criminals and terrorists, but internally we have maintained high standards of fitness,” he added. “This is the reason that our cops are bringing sports titles home.”
Afridi is not the only policemen from Sindh who scores high in international sports competition.
Khan Saeed Afridi from the Sindh Police’s special security unit won the World Muay Thai Organization belt in March 2020.
In 2019, he won a silver medal in martial arts category during the World Police Games held in Chengdu, China.
