Diriyah, Jewel of the Kingdom: Diriyah youth take center stage at Formula E’s 2022 inaugural race

  • Diriyah is the perfect host for the blend of innovation, culture and sustainability that the e-Prix stands for,” AlHussaini said

In the backdrop of the stunning At-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site in Diriyah, the season opener for the 2022 FIA Formula E saw the young men and women of Diriyah stand with pride, welcoming racers to the Diriyah Street circuit. In what turned out to be a dazzler in the desert, 22 young locals were chosen as grid ambassadors for the eighth season of Formula E, as the race lights lit up for the fourth time in Diriyah.
Reinforcing its commitment to invest in the personal growth of the Diriyah community, the Diriyah Gate Development Authority identified the 22 young Saudis to escort the drivers participating in the opening race. The hosts were selected by DGDA’s community engagement team, who worked in partnership with the Ministry of Sports to provide training that prepared the grid ambassadors with knowledge about the race and safety protocols for the Diriyah e-Prix.
Sara AlHussaini, a community engagement senior officer at DGDA, said: “Having young Diriyah locals as grid ambassadors for the opening race demonstrates the hospitality of Diriyah and the future of quality sports events in the Kingdom. Furthermore, in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals and objectives set out by Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, the participation of Diriyah’s youth as grid ambassadors will have a positive impact on the community and inspire Diriyah’s young boys and girls to take up racing as a sport.”
In addition to the grid ambassadors, community businesses across Diriyah showcased the best of their culinary offerings with food trucks assembled at the circuit for spectators to taste the flavors of Diriyah. “I am delighted to see our young Saudi talent taking every opportunity to ensure the world is comfortably welcomed in Diriyah. Their dedication, pride and commitment reinforce that the Kingdom is a world-class tourism and entertainment destination. Diriyah is the perfect host for the blend of innovation, culture and sustainability that the e-Prix stands for,” AlHussaini said.
DGDA’s community engagement team encourages members of the local community, both young and old, to actively participate in the programs it offers and be part of a group of Saudi ambassadors who are proud of their history and heritage.

Saudi, Pakistan defense chiefs discuss ‘measures needed to halt’ Iranian attacks on Kingdom

RIYADH: Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Pakistan’s  Chief of Defense Forces Asim Munir discussed Iran’s attacks on the Kingdom, amid the escalating military conflict in the Middle East.

“We discussed Iranian attacks on the Kingdom and the measures needed to halt them within the framework of our Joint Strategic Defense Agreement,” Prince Khalid wrote on social media early on Saturday.

“We stressed that such actions undermine regional security and stability and expressed hope that the Iranian side will exercise wisdom and avoid miscalculation.”

The US and Israel began a large-scale military campaign against Iran on Feb. 28. Iran has since attacked a number of sites across the Gulf.

Tehran has also attacked US and Israeli military assets as the war as escalated, impacting lives in the peaceful Arabian Gulf peninsula and risked shaking the global economy as Iran continued restricting energy shipping along the Strait of Hormuz.

The Saudi Defense Ministry said a number of drones had been shot down that were targeting the Shayba oil field in the Empty Quarter on Saturday.

A drone attacked the US embassy in Riyadh on Tuesday causing a minor fire, but no one was hurt in the incident.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a “Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement”  in September, pledging that aggression against one country would be treated as an attack on both.

Separately, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif, the Saudi interior minister, received a call from his Pakistani counterpart Raza Naqvi, who condemned the blatant attacks targeting the Kingdom and affirmed his country’s solidarity in confronting any threats to the Kingdom’s security and stability, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.
