POLL: Readers oppose reintroduction of coronavirus lockdown

  • The number of infected people is on the increase in some places
  • More than half said they opposed a lockdown

DUBAI: Hundreds of Arab News readers have said they were opposed to the reintroduction of a lockdown, even if the number of people infected with the coronavirus continued to rise.

Lebanon is about begin a two-week lockdown after the country’s health minister slammed people for a “lack of community discipline and disregard” for all preventive measures and warned that the coronavirus outbreak was taking a “dangerous turn.”

Elsewhere Oman is approaching the end of a lockdown, but will be enforcing a night time curfew over the Eid Al-Adhar period and a ban on movement will be enforced.

But while the potentially deadly virus tries to make an unwelcome comeback in parts of the world the prospect of a return to widespread lockdowns is looking to be an unwelcomed one.

And in the UK where the number of infected and mortality rates are among the highest in the world, the focus seems to be on reopening the country to its residents.

An Arab News Twitter Poll revealed that 54.6 percent of the 1,014 who took part were opposed to the idea of another lockdown.

Just 32.9 percent said they supported the idea of closing down to combat the spread of the virus, 12.4 percent said they were undecided.
