ISLAMABAD: Pakistan received another 4.7 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine from the United States, bringing the total number of COVID-19 vaccines delivered from the US to 47.3 million doses, the US Embassy in Islamabad said late Tuesday.
The 220 million-strong South Asian nation is currently battling an omicron-driven fifth wave of coronavirus infections. The country reported 6,047 new cases and 29 deaths in the last 24 hours.
The latest delivery of vaccines comes at a critical time for Pakistan as it intensifies its vaccination campaign to curb a spike in COVID-19 cases across the country.
Amid a sharp increase in the infection, Pakistan’s government launched a nationwide door to door anti-COVID vaccination drive on Tuesday and set a target to administer over 30.5 million doses of coronavirus vaccines in two weeks.
“The United States is leading the world in vaccine donations. With the 4.7M Pfizer vaccines that arrived this weekend, we’ve shipped 47.3M vaccines to Pakistan so far,” US Embassy tweeted.
Since the start of the pandemic last year, Pakistan has reported 1,436,413 COVID-19 cases and 29,330 deaths, with the government pushing for strict compliance with health protocols to curb the outbreak.
