ISLAMABAD: A senior American lawmaker on Sunday described the bilateral relations between the United States and Pakistan as “incredibly important” in a video message recorded to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The US and Pakistan were close allies during the Cold War, though their relations remained narrowly focused on their defense and security requirements.
The recent war in Afghanistan significantly strained their ties which hit a new low after former prime minister Imran Khan accused the US of backing his political rivals, now in government, in their bid to oust him from power.
“I am so grateful to the people of Pakistan and to the staff of the embassy for the incredibly important relationship between the United States and Pakistan,” said US Senator Chris Murphy, who chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism.
“As with every bilateral relationship, there are ups and downs but this one has endured the test of time and I look forward to continuing to grow it for the next 75 years,” he continued.
Senator Murphy said his country had devoted significant resources to build the Pakistani democracy and to work together on joint security projects.
Pakistan’s ambassador to the US also praised him for issuing the statement, saying the relations between the two countries would “bounce back with economic content at the center.”
