ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's planning minister Asad Umar announced on Friday people who had not been vaccinated in the country were at greater risk of contracting the coronavirus than the ones who had benefited from the national immunization campaign.
Umar, who also supervises the National Command and Operation Center that develops and coordinates Pakistan's pandemic response, said in a Twitter post data analytics had shown that unvaccinated Pakistanis were "at 7 times higher risk of getting covid" while asking people to get themselves inoculated.
Addressing a news conference in Islamabad, the minister urged people to be cautious during the Eid holidays next week and asked those who had not been inoculated yet to avoid going to the northern areas for tourism.
Pakistan has so far vaccinated over 22.2 million people since the beginning of its immunization drive in February.
The country has a total population of 220 million out of which 125 million people are eligible for vaccination.
According to official statists, Pakistan recorded 2,783 coronavirus cases and 39 deaths from the infectious respiratory disease in the last 24 hours.
