ISLAMABAD: Two key coalition partners of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party held a meeting on Monday to discuss the political situation ahead of a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The meeting between the Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan Muslim League Quaid (PML-Q) was held in Islamabad at the residence of Syed Aminul Haque of the MQM-P who is also the federal minister of information technology.
Pakistan has witnessed a flurry of political activity since the opposition filed a no-confidence motion against the prime minister earlier this month. The government and opposition factions have held several meetings with smaller parliamentary parties since these groups' numbers in parliamnet will add up to determine the outcome of the no-trust vote this week.
"The meeting discussed the rapidly changing political situation [in the country] and the possible no-confidence vote," the MQM-P said in a statement issued after the interaction. "The two parties agreed to make a final decision on the situation in the next one to two days."
The statement said such meetings were in line with democratic traditions since they were important to ensure the supremacy of the constitution and parliament.
While some opposition leaders say they have the support of the government's allied parties and adequate numbers to oust the prime minister, PML-Q and MQM-P leaders have repeatedly said they have not yet made a decision on whether they will leave the ruling coalition or not.
The meeting between PML-Q and MQM-P comes after a meeting between the MQM-P and the opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party on Sunday.
