ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani will convene a special session of the upper house this week to discuss escalating tensions in Gaza, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said in a report on Monday.
Israel intensified its bombing of the Gaza Strip on Monday with air strikes while its aircraft also struck southern Lebanon overnight. Over 4,600 Palestinians have been killed due to Israel’s relentless bombing of the enclave since Oct. 7, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Israel has amassed tanks and troops near the fenced border around Gaza for what could be a planned ground invasion of the territory.
“Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani has decided to convene a session of the Senate during this week to address the pressing issue of the ongoing Palestine situation, following the barbaric bombings by the Zionist Israeli Army in besieged Gaza Strip,” the APP said in a report.
Senator Ishaq Dar, leader of the house in the Senate, and Senator Manzoor Kakar had written to Sanjrani to convene the session, the report said.
“This session aims to emphasize Pakistan’s commitment to peace, justice, and solidarity with the Palestinian people,” the report added.
Pakistan last week sent 100 tons of relief items for Palestinians in Gaza. Islamabad has called on Israel to lift its blockade on Gaza and allow Palestinians access to food, water and medicines.
The South Asian country does not recognize Israel and has consistently called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al Sharif as its capital.
