ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced two-moth reduction in prisoner sentences all over the country on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, Pakistan state media reported.
The prime minister made the announcement during his visit to the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore on Sunday. He announced the formation of a Jail Reforms Committee, headed by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, to evolve a comprehensive strategy to facilitate prisoners and overall improvement of the prison system.
The committee will include chief secretaries of all provinces, jail authorities, prisoners and their relatives, the state-run Radio Pakistan reported.
"It is the government's responsibility to facilitate prisoners as useful citizens of society after completion of their sentence," the report quoted PM Sharif as saying.
The prime minister announced that service benefits of prison staff would be brought at par with the police.
He directed the jail authorities to utilize all available resources in an effective manner to meet basic requirements of inmates.
