ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said he would bring the nation out on the streets and they would march to Islamabad to convey the United States (US) Pakistan was a "free country." 

The development comes after Khan’s repeated allegations in public rallies that a "US-instigated conspiracy" was behind his ouster for what he said pursuing an “independent” foreign policy for Pakistan.  

Khan said in March his government had received a letter via the then Pakistani ambassador in Washington, which threatened a "regime change" in Pakistan. The US has dismissed the allegations, saying there was “absolutely no truth” to the claims. 

On Tuesday, Khan asked his supporters to gather people from every village, street and locality and prepare them for the movement for a "true freedom," the Dawn news website reported. 

"We will take to the streets, march to Islamabad and give a message to America that we are a free country. We will give them the message that we are an honourable country which won't become anyone's puppet," Khan was quoted as telling parliamentarians at a ceremony in Peshawar. 

"We will tell them that we will not accept this imported government in any way." 

The former premier said America's strategy of a "regime change" in Pakistan was similar to what it did to Iran in the 1950s and then Chile. 

"They first gave money to media outlets and turned them against the government. Then they bought politicians of the ruling party and later fed money to the opposition," the report quoted him as saying.  

"This is what they did in Pakistan too." 

Earlier in the day, Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party held countrywide demonstrations in front of the offices of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) after accusing its top official of being “partisan” and demanding his resignation. 

The PTI government was toppled after Khan lost a no-confidence vote in parliament on April 10. 

Last week, Khan told a news conference that Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja was not "neutral" since he was deliberately taking action against his party. The PTI chairman demanded Raja step down from his post. 

The top official dismissed the demand while talking to a local news channel, saying he was working in the best interests of the country and would continue to do so.
