RIYADH: Chinese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Li Chengwen, has said here that the great victory of the Second World War marked a turning point in China’s history, as the UN-based post-war international order has largely ensured peace and development for nearly 70 years.
Speaking at a reception recently to mark his country’s victory in the war of resistance and the founding of the United Nations, he said that to commemorate the victory is to keep history firmly in mind and build a better future
“China suffered over 35 million casualties, both military and civilian, and over $600 billion in direct and indirect economic losses,” the envoy elaborated.
More than 70 years ago, in a vicious attempt to divide and rule the world, the fascists launched the Second World War, whose flames spread across Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania, where more than 80 countries and regions with around two billion people were involved, the diplomat said.
In this context, he added, all peace-loving countries and people from around the world rose in defense, and eventually attained victory.
“This year is of special significance for the whole world. Countries around the world have held various forms of commemoration,” Li said, adding that China also held a series of solemn commemorations in Beijing, including a military parade.
“With a history of over 5,000 years, nevertheless, it was gradually reduced to a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society due to the corruption of its feudal rule and the invasion by imperialist powers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” he said.
“The Second World War, the darkest chapter in human history, brought an unparalleled catastrophe to human civilization, and plunged the people across Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania into an abyss of misery. “History is the best textbook. The purpose of the commemoration is to reflect on the untold disaster brought about by the fascists, to arouse people’s yearning and commitment to peace and to avoid the repetition of historical tragedies.
“As one of the founding members and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China has always advocated and upheld the spirit of the UN charter, and adheres to the road of peaceful development.”
