Pakistani consulate officials visited Makkah jail on Thursday to provide assistance to their imprisoned fellow citizens.
The team comprised Consul General Aftab Khokhar, Vice Consul Tahseem-Ul-Haq Haqqi and the consulate's welfare officials.
Several prisoners welcomed the visit, especially after officials told them the Pakistani government was trying to get them released early, according to a statement released by the consulate.
The team also met officials from the jail's administration and urged them to assist the Pakistani prisoners.
The head of the jail promised he would do so within the rules and regulations. He would also process the paperwork of inmates who had served their terms, and others close to completing their sentences, the statement said.
"The consulate team’s visit was part of the government’s instructions to maintain contact with Pakistani prisoners. The consulate has always endeavored to implement government policy and instructions with regard to Pakistanis detained in Saudi jails," the statement said.
Consulate officials previously visited the jail in Makkah on Feb. 13. The team will next visit Madinah jail on March 2.
