Korean artist Psy’s Gangnam Style has created history. The dance track phenomenon has become YouTube’s most-watched video of all time. Up to now it has hit 813,732,571 views, maybe including my own viewing of the video several dozens time. It is an astonishing achievement for a video released mid-July this year.
It has become an ‘addiction,’ which makes you to view it over and over again. There are several other feature videos involving Psy and his Gangnam Style hitting well over 100 million views. The previous record for the highest number of views in YouTube was held by ‘Baby’ by the Canadian ‘heartthrob,’ Justin Bieber. It is said that each day Gangnam Style is being watched by 7-10 million times. Isn’t it amazing!
The dance has sparked numerous copycat versions, being performed by a diverse fan-base including Filipino prison inmates, prominent Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and a Chinese robot. Gangnam Style, which won best video at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards, has also been number one in 28 countries.
Now it also holds the Guinness World Record for the most liked song ever — currently with a little over 5.5 million likes on YouTube. The video pokes fun at the consumerism of Gangnam, an affluent suburb of the South Korean capital Seoul. No doubt, it is a wonderful video, you have to see it to believe it! — S.H.
