This new garbage dump is considered to be one of the environmental safety projects in Jeddah, rated to be among the highly polluted cities of the world.
The project consists of a unit for hygienic dumping of garbage extending on an area of 8,000 sq. meters with a capacity of 1,800 tons a day.
It also includes a factory to separate the garbage into four categories: rejected garbage that will be ground and buried deep; garbage consisting of iron, steel and aluminum that could be recycled; garbage made up of materials that could be restored such as carton, paper and plastics; and organic material that will be returned to the dumping area.
The mayor also launched a project for garbage investment consisting of two factories. The first is for the recycling of tires set up in an area of 2,000 sq. meters with a daily capacity of 40 tons and the second for recycling. The tires are cut into small pieces of various density and will be mixed with copper for manufacturing of tar and asphalt. The second, built on an area of 12,000 sq. meters, is for the recycling of plants with a daily capacity of 30 tons. The plants are made into organic fertilizer for sale to farmers and agricultural companies.
A number of Jeddah residents have asked the municipality to give maximum attention to the environmental safety and cleanliness, especially at the dams and water drainage projects so as not to create areas for stagnant water that breeds mosquitoes.
