PESHAWAR: At least four people were killed and one was injured on Sunday after a vehicle carrying tourists plunged into a deep ravine in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, an emergency response service said.
The crash involved a vehicle traveling from the eastern city of Sialkot, which veered off the road and fell into a ravine in the mountainous rural area of Dum Narian, close to Kiwai village in KP’s Mansehra district.
“The injured were identified as Taimur son of Khurram, while the deceased included Tanveer son of Sahir, Junaid son of Sohail and two women,” Rescue 1122 emergency service said in a statement.
Rescue 1122 did not specify why the vehicle veered off the road and fell into the ravine.
The mountain roads around Dum Narian and Kiwai village wind through steep Himalayan terrain, where sharp turns, narrow tracks, and deep gorges make driving extremely challenging. Heavy rain, landslides, and slippery roads can turn these scenic routes into dangerous stretches where vehicles risk losing control and plunging into ravines.
Rescue 1122 said the injured were provided first aid before being shifted to Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Balakot for further medical treatment. It added that the bodies of the deceased were also shifted to the hispital for legal proceedings.
Road accidents in Pakistan are often caused by poor road conditions, weak enforcement of traffic laws, and unsafe driving practices.
In May, a minibus rammed into a bus parked along a motorway in northwest Pakistan, killing 17 people and injuring five others.
