LONDON: The Jordanian field hospital in southern Gaza has provided 126 prostheses for upper and lower limbs to patients in the Palestinian coastal enclave since May.
The assistance is part of an initiative launched in 2024 by the Restoring Hope Society, under King Abdullah’s directives. It has provided more than 1,200 prosthetic limbs to patients, according to Jordan News Agency.
The scheme helps amputees regain mobility and resume their daily lives after losing limbs in the Israeli war on Gaza since late 2023.
The hospital recently received 1,000 advanced prosthetic limbs. Medical staff can fit a permanent prosthetic within two hours, tailoring each one to meet the individual needs of patients, including children. Additionally, the facility offers flexible carbon-fiber prosthetic feet designed to navigate Gaza’s war-damaged terrain.
The hospital in southern Gaza, operated by the Jordanian Armed Forces, includes specialized clinics that cover various medical fields. These include general surgery, internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, anesthesia and intensive care, dermatology, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, pediatric and neonatal surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, plastic and burn surgery, and maxillofacial surgery.
Jordan runs two field hospitals in Gaza: one in the north, established in 2009, and another in Khan Younis in the south, established in November 2023.
The country’s humanitarian initiatives in Gaza also include programs such as a land route for aid deliveries, a mobile bakery and a scheme to evacuate medical patients in critical condition to hospitals in Jordan.
