Saudi Arabia urges responsible AI governance at UN

  • Calls for global cooperation, ethical safeguards, and respect for national sovereignty in AI policy

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia reaffirmed the importance of strengthening international cooperation to ensure the responsible use of artificial intelligence and to harness its potential for advancing sustainable development.

On behalf of the Arab Group, the Kingdom delivered a statement during the UN General Assembly’s interactive dialogue in New York with the co-chairs of the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI.

In a statement by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Abdulaziz Alwasil, the Kingdom welcomed efforts to implement the Global Digital Compact and establish the independent panel on AI.

It also emphasized the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation among governments, the UN, the private sector, academic institutions, and civil society, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday.

The Kingdom stressed that member states should play a central role in any future AI governance mechanisms, while respecting each country’s sovereign right to formulate national policies in line with its development priorities and needs.

The Saudi envoy also highlighted the importance of developing ethical frameworks for the responsible use of AI based on transparency, reliability, and accountability, while safeguarding privacy and human rights and taking into account cultural and societal values.

The Kingdom emphasized the need to address risks arising from the misuse of AI technologies, including misinformation, deepfakes, and cyberattacks, to strengthen public trust and promote their safe and beneficial use worldwide.
