Yemen urges UN to punish political spoilers, accuses Zubaidi of treason

  • The call comes amid rising tensions over the future of southern Yemen

DUBAI: Yemen’s representative to the UN Security Council on Tuesday called for action against individuals accused of obstructing the country’s political transition, naming southern separatist leader Aidarus Al-Zubaidi as a leading figure accused of high treason.
Ambassador Abdullah Al-Saadi said the Yemeni government had asked the Security Council to update its sanctions list to include those involved in undermining state institutions, blocking the political process or imposing unilateral measures by force.
Al-Saadi said the government had taken measures against individuals accused of rebellion, corruption and serious rights violations, including Al-Zubaidi, whom it accused of undermining state institutions, fueling internal divisions and obstructing efforts to confront the Houthi movement.
The Yemeni representative said the government remained committed to addressing the southern issue through a comprehensive dialogue under Saudi auspices, while warning that continued actions outside state authority threatened Yemen’s stability and unity.
He also urged the Security Council to ensure the implementation of existing resolutions and hold accountable those threatening peace efforts.
