ISTANBUL: Turkish border guards seized more than one ton of drugs concealed in a truck at the Greek border this week, authorities said on Friday.
According to the trade ministry, the shipment was intercepted at the Ipsala border crossing in northwest Turkiye and contained more than 55 million euros ($64 million dollars) worth of narcotics, including methamphetamine, heroin and opium.
While the Turkish customs service did not respond to AFP queries over the origin of the drugs, the DHA and IHA news agencies reported that the truck came from Iran.
Turkish authorities say they seized a total of 33.6 tons of drugs with a market value of nearly 840 million euros in 2025.
Turkiye shares a border with Iran and lies on the so-called Balkan route used for transporting Afghan heroin to Europe.
