Jazan mangoes power Saudi tropical fruit production

RIYADH: Jazan region continues to solidify its status as a premier hub for tropical fruit production, with mangoes emerging as a leading national brand.

Accounting for approximately 60 percent of the Kingdom’s total output, Jazan produces more than 65,000 tonnes of mangoes annually, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The region’s fertile soil and temperate climate support more than 1 million trees across governorates like Sabya and Abu Arish, yielding over 60 varieties.

Recent advancements in modern irrigation, fertilization, and pest control have significantly improved fruit quality and market competitiveness.

Supported by agricultural development programs under Saudi Vision 2030, these efforts focus on enhancing agricultural sustainability and expanding processing industries.

The reputation of Jazan mangoes has already secured a strong presence in Gulf Cooperation Council markets and Jordan through rigorous health and packaging standards.

The region aims to transform its harvest season into an international tropical fruit exhibition to boost agricultural tourism and investment, SPA noted.

This growth reflects the Kingdom’s broader goals of achieving food security and diversifying income sources by leveraging the unique comparative advantages of its diverse regions.

Recently, the mango harvest event in Sabya governorate has evolved into a strategic economic platform, moving beyond fruit displays to showcase a comprehensive system of marketing, manufacturing, and logistics.

This integrated approach aims to streamline the journey of Jazan’s agricultural products from farms to consumers, enhancing their reach across the Kingdom.

Marketing initiatives highlighted at the event include the design of custom packaging featuring the visual identities of local farms.

By establishing a distinct marketing identity, these efforts reflect the origin and quality of the produce, increasing its appeal in retail outlets and building stronger consumer trust in local brands.

The event also focused on food processing and logistical efficiency. Innovations in transforming mangoes and tropical fruits into value-added products, such as juices, jams, and dried fruits, help reduce waste and create new economic opportunities.

Furthermore, specialized transport services now ensure the rapid delivery of high-quality crops to various regions, allowing farmers to expand their market scope effectively, SPA added.
