AlUla gains global attention for dark skies

  • Royal Commission for AlUla continues to protect the environment by reducing light pollution and developing astronomical tourism

ALULA: AlUla is attracting global attention during International Dark Sky Week, running from April 13 to 20, as a leading astrotourism destination with some of the world’s clearest night skies.

The Royal Commission for AlUla continues to protect the environment by reducing light pollution and developing astronomical tourism, in line with DarkSky International’s goals to preserve the night sky.

This commitment is reflected in the official recognition of several AlUla sites as International Dark Sky Places, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

Sharaan Nature Reserve and Wadi Nakhlah Nature Reserve were recently designated, adding to the 2024 accreditation of AlUla Manara and AlGharameel Nature Reserve, the first such sites in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.

Together, they join more than 250 protected Dark Sky locations worldwide.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection, night-sky preservation, and sustainable tourism, further positioning AlUla as a global hub for astronomy experiences in line with Saudi Vision 2030.
