French Residence in Jeddah hosts ‘Memoria’ to celebrate art of photography

  • Cultural gathering brings together diplomats, figures from cultural, social sectors

JEDDAH: The French Residence in Jeddah on Thursday hosted a photography exhibition, “Memoria,” featuring work by Saudi photographer Mohammed Mohtasib.

A cultural gathering that brought together art, memory, and humanitarian engagement, it was attended by diplomats and figures from the cultural and social sectors.

The exhibition presented a visual journey through human stories and diverse cultures from around the world, using photography as the medium to reflect shared human experiences and preserve cultural identity.

“Memoria” is among Mohtasib’s key works, highlighting his approach of transforming everyday moments into powerful visual narratives.

Mohtasib said the exhibition aimed to build cultural understanding, and added: “The aim is to introduce the Saudi community to different cultures and to highlight that diverse people and traditions have existed for thousands of years and deserve respect.

“It is also to encourage openness towards other cultures and mutual acceptance, even when differences exist, just as others accept us.”

The idea developed, following discussions with the French consul general, to associate the exhibition with organizations working in cultural and social fields, particularly those supporting women and children.

Mohtasib said: “The consul general, being an art enthusiast, encouraged collaboration and recommended Al Oula Women’s Charitable Association, due to its long-standing role since 1962. I decided to donate 50 percent of the income to them.”

He plans to expand the exhibition across the Kingdom, and added: “I will coordinate with different embassies, including Egypt, and ensure that this effort is linked with nonprofit organizations as part of its social and income goals.”

Mohammed Nehad, the consul general of France in Jeddah, commended the exhibition and its cultural significance, and added: “France is proud to support artistic initiatives and cultural exchange with Saudi Arabia. It is a privilege to see this residence hosting an event that brings together art, memory, and humanitarian values.

“This exhibition shows how artists can contribute to society not only through creativity but also through initiatives that support others and strengthen human connection.”

He emphasized the importance of cultural initiatives in strengthening dialogue, and said: “In today’s world, cultural exchange plays an important role in building understanding between communities and encouraging meaningful dialogue across borders.”

Abeer Abousleiman, the executive director of Al Oula Women’s Charitable Association, welcomed the collaboration and praised the exhibition’s humanitarian dimension, saying: “This exhibition features impactful works, many of which reflect human stories that align with our mission of supporting families and empowering young people.”
