Rain revives historic wells in Northern Borders

RAFHA: Recent rainfall has transformed the Qalban Al-Duwaid depression in the Northern Borders into a striking aquatic landscape, highlighting the desert’s vitality and seasonal renewal.

More than 250 wells, arranged in a circular pattern across the surface, have been documented by the Saudi Press Agency.

The arrangement reflects traditional, innovative solutions used to adapt to the desert environment and secure vital water sources.

The regional branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has implemented a project to protect the wells from deterioration, including cataloging and monitoring the wells, installing secure covers and reinforced concrete structures over their openings, and safeguarding the water from contamination.

The work aims to ensure visitor safety, as well as preserving the wells as a sustainable and essential water resource.
