Morocco says Daesh suspects held in joint op with Spain

  • Moroccan forces arrested two suspects in the northern port city of Tangiers
  • The report said that “the head of this terrorist cell” was arrested Mallorca

RABAT: Three suspects affiliated with the Daesh group were arrested on Wednesday in a joint security operation between Morocco and Spain, Moroccan counterterrorism police announced.
The official MAP news agency reported a statement from the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) in Rabat as saying Moroccan forces arrested two suspects in the northern port city of Tangiers.
The report said that “the head of this terrorist cell” was arrested on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca.
MAP said that initial findings of the Moroccan investigation showed that the two suspects in custody in the country were “involved in financing and logistical support” for Daesh militants in the Sahel and Somalia.
The agency quoted the BCIJ statement as saying the leader of the cell was “suspected of having planned the execution of a terrorist attack in Spain” as a lone wolf operation.
The BCIJ said Moroccan-Spanish security cooperation resulted in the dismantling of “more than 30 terrorist cells since 2014 in both countries.”
