Project Masam destroys 926 mines, explosive remnants in Mukalla

RIYADH: Emergency response teams from Project Masam, the Saudi Arabia-funded humanitarian landmine clearance initiative in Yemen, carried out a demolition operation on Thursday in the city of Mukalla, Hadhramaut Governorate.

In cooperation with the Executive Mine Action Center's Mukalla branch, the Masam demining team destroyed 926 pieces of mines and explosive remnants of war. The destroyed materials included six anti-tank mines, three anti-personnel mines, 25 mortar shells (82mm), 75 mortar shells (81mm), 105 mortar shells (60mm), 55 RPG rounds, nine tank shells, 12 B-10 shells, four improvised explosive devices, 83 anti-tank mine fuses (T-62), 258 Katyusha rocket fuses, 253 artillery fuses (122mm), and 38 mortar fuses.

Project Masam’s aim is to clear the areas in which it operates in order to save civilian lives, restore safety, and enable humanitarian aid.

This was the sixth operation of its kind in Mukalla since mid-January. Since then, 12,413 mines, improvised explosive devices and unexploded ordnances have been destroyed.
