Cyprus FM says drones that hit British airbase launched from Lebanon

  • ‘Focus must now be on the Lebanese front,’ Constantinos Kombos says

LONDON: The drone attack on the British military base at Akrotiri in Cyprus originated from Lebanon, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said on Sunday.

The attack last Sunday on the Royal Air Force base, using suspected Iranian Shahed drones, caused minimal damage and no casualties.

Kombos said that “the focus must now be on the Lebanese front and no possibility can be ruled out,” the Syrian Arab News Agency reported.

His remarks come amid rising tensions in the region after Hezbollah, which the UK and other nations have proscribed as a terrorist organization, launched projectiles into Israel following the US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji responded on X to Kombos’ remarks.

“Hezbollah’s unlawful activities, of which the blatant attack on Cyprus was one such manifestation, defy the will of the Lebanese government and people,” he said.

“We will not allow Lebanon to be turned into a platform for Iranian agendas.”

Israel hit back against Hezbollah with strikes on southern Beirut and southern Lebanon, killing about 300 people and causing widespread destruction, while its forces occupied key areas south of the Litani River.
