PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met a delegation of the religio-political party Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and briefed it on the security situation in the region, a day after the party announced nationwide protests over US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Tensions have surged in the Middle East since Saturday, when the United States and Israel launched surprise airstrikes against Iran amid negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Iran confirmed on Sunday that its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed in the strikes and retaliated with drone and missile attacks against US military installations in the Gulf.
The prime minister met the JI chief, Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, and briefed his delegation about the recent developments.
“An in-camera briefing was given to the Jamaat-e-Islami chief on the current situation in Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle East and Gulf,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement.
“The delegation was taken into confidence regarding Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and measures, and was also informed about steps being taken by Pakistani embassies in Iran and Gulf countries to facilitate Pakistani citizens.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and several federal ministers also attended the meeting, according to the statement.
A day earlier, Jamaat-e-Islami had announced plans to hold countrywide protests on Friday against what it described as US and Israeli aggression against Iran, urging the Pakistani government to withdraw from US President Donald Trump’s Gaza Peace Board.
The party had also called on the government and opposition to condemn the attacks and demanded an investigation into the deaths of protesters who had stormed the US consulate in Karachi earlier this week.
A Reuters report cited two American officials as saying that US Marines had fired at the demonstrators. However, the US officials said it was unclear whether rounds fired by Marines struck or killed anyone.
Pakistan has repeatedly said it is pursuing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region while assisting its nationals in Iran and neighboring Gulf states as the conflict unfolds.
