Israeli settlers vandalize graves at Islamic cemetery in Jerusalem

  • Several cemeteries near the city’s eastern and southern walls have been damaged in recent years by settler vandalism and excavation works by Israeli authorities

LONDON: Israeli settlers vandalized graves at an Islamic cemetery in occupied East Jerusalem on Monday.

They destroyed numerous headstones and caused significant damage to others, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.

Several Islamic cemeteries near the ancient eastern and southern walls of Jerusalem and have been damaged by vandals or excavation works by authorities since 2021.

The two most prominent targets have been Al-Yusufiya and Bab Al-Rahma graveyards. Headstones at the latter, located next to the eastern wall of Al-Aqsa Mosque, were vandalized on two separate occasions last year.

The Israel Nature and Parks Authority plans to create a “Bible Trail” in the area that will include parks that extend into the neighborhoods of Silwan, Al-Bustan, Wadi Al-Hilweh, and Batn Al-Hawa, where a biblically-themed “City of David” is under development.
