Saudi Arabia’s AlUla nature reserves win Dark Sky recognition

  • The two reserves in AlUla join more than 250 locations worldwide that are protected from light pollution
  • AlUla Manara and AlGharameel Nature Reserve, also both in AlUla, received Dark Sky Park designations last year

ALULA: Two more nature reserves in Saudi Arabia’s AlUla have won recognition as Dark Sky Places, joining more than 250 locations worldwide that are protected from light pollution.

The official accreditation of Sharaan National Park and Wadi Nakhlah reserves from DarkSky International builds on AlUla’s 2024 achievement.

Last year, AlUla Manara and Al-Gharameel Nature Reserve became the first sites in the Kingdom and Gulf region to receive Dark Sky Park designations.

The latest recognition strengthens AlUla’s position as a leading global destination for night-sky protection and astronomical tourism, said the Royal Commission for AlUla in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency recently.

Dark Sky International noted earlier that the reserves’ combined area of 6,146 sq. km reflects the “expanded scope of environmental protection efforts aimed at preserving AlUla’s pristine night skies and reducing light pollution across a vast geographical area.”

DarkSky International works to reduce light pollution in urban and rural areas and raise global awareness of the importance of protecting the night sky.

AlUla’s protected areas are located in the heart of northwest Arabia, near the ancient oasis city of AlUla in Madinah province.

“Towering sandstone cliffs, labyrinthine canyons, tranquil basins, and volcanic formations create a dramatic setting where geological diversity, cultural heritage, and thriving biodiversity converge beneath exceptionally dark, open skies,” DarkSky International stated.

Scientists have noted that AlUla’s natural isolation from urban light sources, combined with ideal atmospheric conditions, makes it a world-class destination for stargazing, astronomy education, and immersive dark-sky experiences.

With the phased development of its reserves, AlUla is now ranked third globally in the Dark Sky Park category.

Saudi Arabia says recent STC military movements in Hadramout, Al-Mahra were unilateral, uncoordinated

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia said Thursday that recent military movements in the Yemeni governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahra carried out by the Southern Transitional Council were conducted unilaterally and without coordination with the Presidential Leadership Council or the coalition leadership.

“These movements resulted in an unjustified escalation that harmed the interests of all segments of Yemeni people, as well as the Southern cause and the coalition's efforts,” read a statement on the Saudi Press Agency.

The statement said Saudi Arabia has always prioritized preserving the unity of Yemen throughout these recent developments, and it spared no effort to reach peaceful solutions to resolve the situation in both governorates.

In this context, “the Kingdom worked with the brotherly United Arab Emirates, the president of the Presidential Leadership Council, and the brotherly Yemeni government to contain the situation.

“A joint military team was sent from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to put the necessary arrangements in place with the Southern Transitional Council in Aden. These arrangements were made to ensure the return of the Southern Transitional Council forces to their previous positions outside the two governorates and hand over the camps in those areas to the Nation Shield Forces and the local authorities, in accordance with organized procedures under the supervision of the Coalition forces.”

The statement said these efforts remain in progress to restore the situation to its previous state.

Saudi Arabia also said it hopes the public interest will prevail through ending the escalation by the Southern Transitional Council and the withdrawal of its forces from the two governorates in an urgent and orderly manner.
